The Birth of Magokoro New York

In the aftermath of 9/11, amid waves of collective grief, I found myself holding a simple sheet of yuzen washi paper. In that moment of contemplation, inspiration struck—a vision for a polymer coating technique that would later embody what I call 'the beauty of acceptance.

As the thick coating liquid merged with the cloth-like paper, something magical occurred. The traditional yuzen pattern and intricate texture of kozo paper transformed before my eyes, revealing an entirely new dimension of beauty. This metamorphosis spoke to me deeply, symbolizing the profound importance of embracing our differences rather than fearing them.

Since 2001, Magokoro New York has evolved with a singular purpose: to share this philosophy through our creations. Each piece carries forward that original revelation-that when different elements come together, something transcendent emerges. Our name itself, meaning "love in its purest form," reflects the heartfelt intention woven into every artwork we create.

Magokoro

a Japanese term, captures the essence of love in its purest and most profound form. Through the delicate artistry of paper, reimagined in unconventional ways, we weave heartfelt expressions of peace, beauty, and grace. Each creation becomes a tribute to the shared humanity that binds us, celebrating the timeless connection that unites hearts across the world.

About Yuzen washi

Yuzen Washi Paper is synonymous with Japanese style and quality. Brilliant and intense color patterns with gold metallic overlays are silk-screened by hand onto high-quality kozo paper. Inspired by Kimono fabric, each design is painstakingly crafted by artists across Japan.

Yuzen Washi is made from natural fibers like kozo (mulberry bark), gampi, or mitsumata, which are traditional materials used to produce high-quality Japanese paper. The paper is strong, durable, and often has a soft, textured finish.
